Are you thinking of buying a home this next year? Here are a few things to start doing now to prepare to buy your next home in 2017.

Watch your Credit.

Your credit score is going to be a large deciding factor in whether you can get a loan or not and how much of a loan you can get. Start preparing your credit now. If it’s suffering, make sure that over the next few months you get it squared away. Be sure to make all your payments on time! Don’t max out your credit cards either. Only spend 10-30% of the amount, and again, be sure to pay it off by the deadline, if not before. 

Warning: opening a new credit card won’t help. Having recently opened new lines of credit doesn’t look great to mortgage lenders.

Use Christmas.

Be careful with your spending over the holidays. Again, don’t max out your credit card, and don’t go into debt just so you can get your significant other the perfect gift. Instead, consider giving each other money for a home. Maybe you can decide to go a little smaller this Christmas and put the money you would have spent on gifts in a fund for your down payment. 

Pick a Realtor.

Start looking at potential Realtors. You’ll want someone who knows what they’re doing and who’s been in the business for long enough that they know how to help you and your individual needs. Click here to read about my 30+ years in the industry. 

Get Pre-Qualified.

Get pre-qualified before you start looking for a home. It will help you know where you stand financially. This way you’ll know if you need to spend some time boosting your credit, or you’ll have a good idea of what kinds of homes you can afford and how much of a down payment you’ll need.
