Buying a home is more than just finding the right neighborhood. According to Realtor.com, there are 3 kinds of homes to avoid for first-time buyers: The Money, The Bloater, The Cozy One. Let me explain a little further in detail why these are homes to avoid. 

The Money:

This home is the one that has a lot of potential. It’s the one that you find yourself saying, “If only this was fixed, it would be perfect.” You may even find yourself saying this multiple times throughout the showing. Many people like the idea of fixer-uppers and getting to add personal touches, but if you’re not careful, you may be in over your head. Don’t pick a home that has an overwhelming amount of projects. If it does need some things done, know ahead of time what those projects are and how much it’s going to cost  you. You don’t want to run out of money before you even make the bathroom usable. 

The Bloater:

This home is the big and beautiful one that has all the bells and whistles. It may have everything you ever wanted (and even things you didn’t know you wanted), but it can be really expensive. Homes like this usually come with a big mortgage payment and high utility bills. Along with the monthly costs, upkeep can cost a pretty penny as well. For example, that roofing job or painting job will cost way more with all the extra square footage. 

The Cozy One:

Yes, with this home, you’re avoiding all that comes with “The Bloater,” but if you go too far on the other side, you may be causing other problems. Make sure you give you and your family a little room. Having five people share a bathroom can get annoying real quick. If your bedroom has such a teeny closet that you’re having to stuff an armoire into the too-small room, you’ll quickly be busting at the seams. Make sure you give yourself some room to live.
