 Home    Tips for Moving Day

It’s here, the day you’ve been waiting for with excitement and maybe a little dread. It’s moving day! Unfortunately stress is an inevitable side kick to moving day, so I’ve put together a few tips for making the day as stress-free as possible.

Pack ahead of time. This may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how easy it is to get caught up with other things. Make sure that everything is packed and ready to go when you wake up on moving day. Having to throw things in boxes while the movers are in your house can bring unnecessary stress and may cause you to forget something or leave something behind. Don’t procrastinate; you’ll thank yourself later!

If you are moving from your home-for-sale… use the listing period as a chance to “begin” the decluttering process.  My Grandma used to say…  “If you haven’t used it within the past year, DONATE IT!!” (See my blog on decluttering here.)

Schedule the movers beforehand, and know what they offer. Make sure you have a moving truck scheduled and ready to go on moving day. Do this as far ahead of time as you can so you have the time to find trusted movers who offer what you need and can do it on the day you want. There are a lot of companies out there, but not all are trustworthy or offer full services. Make sure you read the fine print and know what you’re getting into.  Let Chuck Malone read your paperwork… he has an eagle eye for detail and will make sure you’re getting a trusted service!

moving day - moving furnitureHave all your things organized for the movers. As you pack, make things easier for you and the movers by writing on the box what room the box should go into and a brief description of what’s in the box. For example, the box holding all your plates, bowels, cups and silverware, write “Kitchen” in big bold letters, and then add “Dishes.” This will help the movers know how to handle the boxes and where to put them in the new house. This way you won’t have the box with your dishes put in the bedroom and the box with your clothes put in the living room. This will make the whole moving and unpacking process 100x easier! Then make sure all your boxes are easily accessible in your old home for the movers to grab and put in the truck.

Make sure the movers know where to put things in your new house. Since you’ve so nicely labeled your boxes, make sure your movers know where these rooms are in your new home. If it’s a 3 bedroom home, maybe have them labeled “Master,” “Bedroom 1” and “Bedroom 2,” then make sure the movers know when which room is which. Again, this will make things easier for them and for you. That way you don’t have to be constantly directing traffic in your new home on moving day.

Unpack as you go, if possible. Now this step is an optional step, as you may not have the ability or time to do this. But if you find yourself with the ability, and the manpower… maybe unpack as you go. While the movers bring things into your home, take your sheets and comforter out of the box and make your bed, so that it’s ready for you when the long day is over! Maybe start hanging up your clothes or putting away dishes. Again, this is an optional step, but if possible, it can make the whole process easier.

moving day - relaxTake a moment to relax and enjoy your new home! This is so important! The movers have left, and you’re now sitting on your couch in your brand new home that we found! Take a moment to relax and enjoy the moment! There may be more work that needs to be done, but take the moment to let it sink in that you’ve finally moved into your dream home!
