It’s the perfect time! You’re going to be getting everything out and packing it up anyway, so you might as well use the time to throw away those things that you don’t want to pack up. 

It will make your life easier! Why pack up and carry junk with you when you don’t even want it? Make your load lighter and get rid of things you no longer want. You won’t have to waste boxes, packing tape and labor on all that “stuff.”

Less is more in your new home! Less truly is more. You don’t want to make your new home look cluttered. Don’t stuff every new nook and cranny with old junk you don’t want anyway. Let this new home be the time you turn over a new leaf.

How to Start

A little bit at a time. Start with one drawer or one closet or one room a day, depending on how much time you have and how much patience you have at the time. Starting small and doing it little-by-little will keep you from being overwhelmed. 

Get rid of it! If you haven’t worn or used it in a year or longer, you’re not likely going to miss it. If it’s still in good condition, give it away. If it’s gross and there’s no hope for it anymore, throw it away. If you don’t love it anymore, get rid of it. I promise that as you start getting rid of stuff, you’ll love the freedom you feel. Unless it was your great-grandmother’s, you can buy it again if you find yourself really missing it. 

Use the time to start packing. As you go through your home, start packing the things you’re going to take to your new home. It will make your packing job so much easier! Just make sure to distinguish which stuff is getting thrown away and which is going to your new home.

Getting rid of old things may be difficult. You may be tempted to keep a lot of stuff “just in case,” but don’t give in. If you don’t use it, get rid of it. You’ll thank yourself later!
