 Home    Tips for Negotiating

Negotiating can be a difficult and stressful part of the home buying process. Although having a REALTOR® on board will make the process easier on your end, I’ve put together a list of tips for winning a stalemate.

  • negotiating - stalemateLike I hinted before, get a REALTOR® to represent you. We know the home buying/selling process like the back of our hands. In fact I’ve done it so many times over the last 40 years, that I could do it in my sleep! (Click here to read more about my background.) We help you get a great deal without ripping off the other negotiator. Whether buying or selling, negotiating with the other party is a part of the process and REALTORS® have the know-how to deal with it.   HINT:  Not all real estate agents are REALTORS®.  And not all REALTORS® are experienced negotiators.

  • Don’t get caught up in emotions. Remember this is business. (Click here to read my blog about dealing with the emotions that come with buying and/or selling a home.) Try and stay levelheaded throughout the process.  This is another place that having a REALTOR® representing you will come in handy. I can help you see it as a business deal and get out of your emotions. We’re simply trying to get the best deal we can while staying reasonable.

  • Be realistic. Don’t be so stubborn and set on a price, that you miss out on more important aspects. There may be a point that you can’t budge on, but make sure that it’s for a logistical reason. You don’t want to miss out on a great deal because you were too stubborn. Again, remember to keep your emotions in check. See it as a deal and try to see what would be a fair deal for both parties.

  • Get creative. If neither party are moving, get creative with offers. If you’re selling, maybe offer some furniture or kitchen appliances. If you’re buying, maybe be willing to take out the new carpet you wanted included. Doing something like this may be the incentive you’re needing.

Don’t let the fear of losing a deal, keep you from negotiating. You may be surprised what you can get. Just remember to stay as levelheaded as you can throughout the process. Think logically and know what you can and can’t afford to do. I will help you through the process!
